Co-Curricular

Public Speaking The college offers many opportunities for engaging public speaking during the students’ time at St Monica’s College. The following public speaking competitions are entered every year: Lions Youth of the Year (also a Leadership Competition); Junior and Senior Rostrum ‘Voice of Youth’; Plain English Speaking Award (PESA); Calannia Junior Public Speaking Competition.

Junior and Senior Debating Competitions are also offered every year. The college has had significant success in these competitions gaining places in Local, State and National Finals in recent years.

Choirs

St Monica’s College has a Junior (Bella Voce); Senior Choir (Colla Voce) and a Saints Combined Chamber Choir. All choirs rehearse every week in the morning before school (or after school if required) at a time decided every year. They participate in several performances every year including the Cairns Eisteddfod; mass; celebrations; Celebrating Excellence Soiree; StMonica’s Live and other appropriate venues.

Instrumental Ensembles

The many musical ensembles include: Jazz B and; Strings Ensembles; Concert Band; Brass Ensemble;  These rehearse in the morning and perform at similar events as the College Choirs. These have many opportunities to perform throughout the year.

Handbells

The two Handbell Ensembles are another of our musical groups that operate throughout the year at the college. The Beginners Ensemble (Poco Campana) begin to learn the art of handbell ringing while the Advanced Ensemble (Tutto Campana) are our senior ringers.   These groups also have the opportunity to perform several times a year.

Students who have musical ability can join potentially one or more of these groups but even students without any musical knowledge can join these groups and start training in that discipline.

Dance

The college has a Junior and Intermediate Dance Troupe who produce outstanding work every year. They perform at college functions; the Cairns Eisteddfod; Viv a Vis Performances; and other events.

Drama

A very active Drama Group – Saints Youth Theatre – exists at the college and meets in the afternoon at St Monica’s College but also have the opportunity to be in the Combined College Musicals and Play Productions.

Visual Art

The Art Club is made up of a number of interested and talented artists who meet regularly to share their love of Art. They enter competitions, share skills and are involved in several Art Projects at the college, including illustrating the STARS (St Monica’s Terrific Authors and Readers) Collections of Short Stories.

Technology

The college technology team run a robotics club, where all are welcome, as part of this club members attend the QSITE technology competitions run in the first three terms of the year, those being:

  • QSITE FNQ Sumo Regional Competition
  • QSITE FNQ Grand Prix Robotics Challenge
  • QSITE FNQ Robocup Regional Competition

Throughout the year the club also competes in the She Flies Tournament of Drones Competition.

Sport

The college has many opportunities for playing different sports and all forms of physical activity. Besides the Swimming Carnival and the Athletics Day, the college also participates in many competitions.

They are very involved in CISSA and JSS.

Wednesday afternoon activities include a wide variety of possibilities for students that is constantly updated and changing, including such activities as: fishing; zumba; yoga; gym; jump mania; running; Yellow Arrow; Fit on the Esplanade etc.

These are only some of the constantly changing opportunities for exciting physical activity at the college where the Physical Education Department and Sports’ Department works tirelessly to ensure the students have every opportunity to be fit, healthy and enjoy sport.
