A College Musical or large performing arts production will be held every two years. This is a collaboration between St Monica’s and St Augustine’s Colleges. During the year where a musical is not offered, a Gala or Tour will be offered to students. Students compete in the Cairns Eisteddfod annually and have a wide variety of performance opportunities including: Dance night, Music Extension Concerts, Cairns Show Performances, Saints Youth Theatre, Talent Quest, St Monica’s Live, Gala, Performing Arts Tours, Sacred Evenings in the Cathedral, Graduation Mass, Liturgies and Masses, Assemblies, Fundraisers, Docemus Awards Evening and a wide variety of other opportunities.
The performers gain an insight into acting, dancing and singing on stage, with all students encouraged to participate in some area, be it on stage, sound, lighting, backstage, front of house, publicity. The Catherine McAuley Multi-purpose centre is equipped with modern lighting and sound systems which enable students to become proficient in these areas. Recently, our new Performing Arts Centre was built on the top floor on Lake Street. All of the Performing Arts rooms are located together with six individual soundproof practice rooms and two very large performing spaces featuring a high roof.
Music is a subject which forms part of the curriculum from Years 8 to 12. It is compulsory in Year 8, then students can select Music as an elective. In years 11 and 12 students can study Senior Music and in Year 12, Music Extension is offered to students. Both Senior Music and Music Extension are QSA board subjects which contribute to the tertiary entrance. Technology is integrated into the curriculum with all Junior and Senior students having access to Sibelius 7, Garage Band and Musescore composing programs. We have an excellent range of instruments including our recent purchase of a Profession Yamaha Baby Grand Piano to cater for the needs of our ensembles and students.
